#Repost of @sustainabilitychampions When a huge typhoon hit Iowa in August 2020 with winds reaching up to 140 mph, 12-year-old Tommy Rhomberg found a unique way to help the storm’s victims—hitting a home run for kindness by creating baseball bats from fallen limbs caused by the storm.⚾️ ❤️Like this post to support innovators who invent new ways of cleaning the planet. Using fallen branches, Tommy designed and carved more than 200 baseball bats, which he sold to raise money for victims of the widespread wind storm, known as a Derecho. Tommy came up with the idea on the day of the storm, which happened to be his best friend's birthday. Knowing Walker Viessman's love for baseball - and surrounded by fallen trees from the storm - Tommy decided to gift his friend a hand-carved bat. The self-taught woodworker begins by taking a fallen branch to a nearby farm, where it's cut into smaller pieces. His dad then saws the pieces into octagons before Tommy finally lathes them into bats. Tommy made the bats using his grandfather's whittling tools and sand paper. He worked until his hands were covered in blisters.
